On the way back to Tokyo, our Shinkansen train got delayed for more than 2 1/2 hours. Apparently someone had jumped in front of a train a few stations before us and caused a region-wide delay. When we finally reached our station at nearly 3 AM, Japan Rail staff were waiting to direct us to the counter where they were giving out compensation money. No confusion, no yelling - all so organized. Everybody got in line and patiently waited for their turn. We got almost 50% of our ticket price back. It wasn’t a pleasant experience per se, but surely it could have been a lot worse.

Ginkakuji(Silver Temple) was supposed to be coated with silver, but that never happened. It’s still nice that we can see how the wooden structure has aged. The amazing sand sculptures adds the silvery touch instead.

Two-day Kyoto

Temple-hopping in Kyoto last weekend.

The first temple, Higashi Honganji - the largest wooden structures in Kyoto - was all covered up for renovation until 2011.
